10 Things to Keep in Mind Before You Start Yoga

People usually resist doing yoga because they feel that they are not flexible; yoga is slow and boring; the result is not quick and obvious; and men think that yoga is for only for women.

Yoga according to me, if practiced every day, can bring a major change in your overall well-being, and can make a healthy and a happy ‘you’. Anyone can do Yoga regardless of the age, size, gender, and ability. Amongst other benefits, it can reduce stress level, improve your sleep pattern, remove toxins, and increase immunity.

Mind-body coordination is the key to yoga and that is possible only if we prepare ourselves well before we start the practice. It is rightly said that success is the sum of lot of small things done correctly and here are the 10 small but key things to keep in mind before you kick start yoga.

Place Discipline

1. Practice yoga in a quiet place

Personal discipline

2. Turn off your phone (or keep it in silent mode) at least 5 mins before you start yoga session.

3. Consciously switch yourself off from the other thoughts and stay calm.

4. At the beginning of your practice, relax your body and breath, by observing your inhalation and exhalation

5. Never practice yoga on a full stomach. Allow at least 3 hours after a meal

Time Discipline

6. The early morning hours are best suited for yoga, though actual practice hours are not very important.

7. It is best to allocate 40- 50minutes for daily practice of yoga.

Clothing: -

8. Wear comfortable clothing.

9. Avoid excess accessories like jewelry, belt, and shoes

10. Yoga is best done on a mat or a blanket and ensure they are of good quality to have a better grip while doing the asanas.


Some Vital Tips: - Regular and mindful practice is very important if one want results. Practice each asana with complete attention and concentration. Consciously be aware of the influence of the individual practice. Hold the position for a while and try it again. Do not give up if you cannot get it right. Everything takes time. Always relax the whole body for few breaths between asanas.

Very nice description on the tips for yoga. As your student I thoroughly inspired by the way you made yoga look simple and in smaller steps. The sessions helped me a lot where I am able to make it part of my activity which help me to be fresh and energetic all day.

Very true. It takes time but ultimately brings the desired result in your body.I have ankyolising spondy.I first met Vidya, I was not able to walk properly. Doctor was advising for surgey. Hip joint & neck was frozen. With regular practice under her observation & guidance , not only i managed to avoid a major surgery but also I am now able to manage my routines comfortably.
