Heritage Transport Museum in Gurgaon- worth getting out of bed on a weekend!

I was not going to give up so easily. So I pushed. “Can we go to the Heritage Transport Museum this weekend? I am hearing great things”. Expecting a no, I just rolled over to the other side to snooze a little more. And then he said ‘Yes’.  Oh and let me tell you that although we were planning this trip for the kids, once there, my husband matched their excitement with his child-like curiosity.

KetchupMoms Rating: 4/5

Where is Heritage Transport Museum, Gurgaon? A 45min. to 1hr. drive from Gurgaon, we used Google Maps. After turning left from the Gurgaon-Ajmer highway one is still on a big wide road till the museum.

Children under 12: Rs. 150/-
Free Admission for: Disabled visitors and 1 companion and Children under 3 year
Art corner: Rs.120
Paint the car: Rs 120

Kids loved it: Well this one of its kind 1 1/2-year-old private museum is truly magnificent in its collection, idea and ambition. It is very kid-friendly, spacious, educative and their ‘paint a car’ is a hit with the little ones.

Their reception counter itself bowled my 3 1/2 twins into demanding a table like that in their bedroom (side-effects of visiting such creative places).

Then started their journey into the world of Indian Transport and its evolution. The beautiful train coupe. The wide variety of carts, Palkis, old school buses, trucks from the 1940’s and some even before that.

The Impalas, Chevrolets, Ambassadors, Convertibles, limousines oh yes they have 75 vintage and classic cars and a whole range of two-wheelers.

The kids were in awe of the Range Rover. The era is brought to life with the reconstruction of those streets and a great collection of antique radio sets, cameras and kid-toys. Some of them will take you back to your childhood too. The posters of really old advertisements and songs from the golden years add to it.

This particular one caught my fancy for the history attached to it. Take a look.

The overhead displays of the car, the boat and the aeroplane are equally inspiring. The art-instalments, wall displays speak volumes about the aesthetic supremacy of the people involved with this place.

They also have a film-show on evolution of transport. Unfortunately the auditorium was closed for maintenance that day.

Food: We had to literally drag the kids out of the exhibition area as it was time for food. Their food corner can of course be better designed and managed. It seems like a small kiosk that is not ready to serve food anytime soon. Nevertheless they have cold-drinks, coffee, tea, water, sandwiches, noodles and some more tidbits to offer. Kids had a sandwich and juice. We opted for vegetarian thalis and although as informed we had to wait for 20 minutes, food was hot, fresh and sufficient. No upset stomachs also means it was prepared under hygienic conditions.

Art Corner: The Transport Museum has a nice arts & crafts corner where the kids can paint, cut and paste and even make models of transport with the help of an activity expert.

Paint the car: After lunchtime this is where our kids spent at least 1 hour if not more. They had to be literally grabbed and gagged and carried away from here. Jokes apart they were not ready to leave, after all u don’t get to paint a car everyday.

The train signal: Yes they have installed an actual train signal that helps kids understand the flagging down and up for the trains. The lever is heavy and needs an adult to pull it with a kid.

Museum Collectibles: They have carts from where you can purchase memorabilia like toy cars, trucks, bags, lamps, coasters etc.

The museum is wheel-chair friendly and they can even provide one if asked for. A guided tour is also available.

On our way back from the Heritage Transport Museum, Gurgaon, I overheard my husband’s tele-conversation “It is an excellent place, just heading home after spending fun 4-5 hours at the museum with the kids. Impressive collection, good activities and kids loved painting a car”. I rest my case.

And by the way I am already planning another trip with a friend and her kids. Let the journey begin.

  1. It looks great – no wonder it was a big hit! 🙂
I’m a big fan of museums myself – I spent a week in D.C. last summer going to as many Smithsonian’s’ as possible.

What do you think?
