24 hours in Delhi with kids

Delhi, the capital city of India, is the perfect blend of culture and modernity. It has seen colossal empires being built and raized, starting from Tomara dynasty which laid the foundation of this city, and subsequently invaded by foreign rulers from Mamluks to Mughals and then to Britishers. It is also an epicentre of polity of nation, of all the debates and opinions. In short, Delhi might have its flaws but due to its glorious past and flourishing present, it is a hit in traveller's list!

How about a day out in Delhi with kids? Imagine having only 24 hours with you, what would be some of the best spots to hit!

1India gate and Rashtrapati Bhawan are a must for everyone visiting Delhi. The location is central Delhi so you can head straight to this place from anywhere. No wonder aura of this place is unmatched with Amar jawan Jyoti constantly reminding us of the sacrifices made by the yesteryear freedom fighters.

2. Teen Murti bhawan- The next destination, you can plan to visit could be Teen Murti bhawan, just a few kilometres from India gate, located to the south of Rashtrapati bhawan. It was the residence of our first prime minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru for 17 years, now converted into museum to maintain his legacy. This place gives us a glimpse into his life, his achievements, the challenges he faced making the younger generation aware about his magnanimous personality.

The place speaks volumes about the history of Delhi, the colonial era and sacrifices made by that generation.

3. Nehru planetarium- Just adjacent to Teen murti bhawan is Nehru planetarium showcasing a wonderful live and interactive show on astronomy. I still remember visiting this place as a ten year old girl and how much curiosity it generated in me about the subject of astronomy. This is a must for kids!

4. Gandhi smriti- Gandhi Smriti located at, 30 January marg is just a couple of kilometres away from central Delhi. It is the place where father of our nation spent his last days. He had his last address here, and attained matrydom at this very place. The place speaks volumes about the history of Delhi, the colonial era and sacrifices made by that generation.

5.National science centre- This is one of the best science museums of North India, inculcating scientific temper amongst students at both college and school level. Their major highlight is 'learning by doing' which is the basis of 2005 national curriculum framework, being referred by all boards of our country. Another major attraction of the place is dinosaur park, which is a total hit amongst young kids.

6. Lotus temple- This temple, located near Nehru Place in south Delhi, is one of a kind, with its unique architecture in the shape of Lotus. It propagated Baha'i faith which believes in oneness of all religions. The serenity and calmness of this place is breathtaking!

7. Akshardham - This is another amazing place to visit with kids. This divine abode of God has about 234 intricately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangled spires and 20,000 statues of India’s Hinduism’s spiritual personalities. It would take about an hour here. One is sure to get awed at the architectural work out here.  There are exhibitions inside Akshardham and kids would love all of them. The exhibitions are displayed in a unique style in 3 huge halls and the cultural boat ride is never to be missed. Later towards the sunset, just occupy a seat on the traditional steps to experience an eternal truth. Yes, it is all about the mind-blowing water show. It is a 24 minute show and the multicolour laser, underwater flames, video projections, water jets and the melodious sound synchronising with the lights will transform our kids to a different world.

8. Dilli Haat - An open air craft and food bazaar, this is one of the best places in Delhi to hang around with kids. Do not miss out those rosewood and sandlewood carvings , sophisticated fabrics and high quality handmade footwears.  If you are big fan of gems and beads, this is the right place to make a good purchase. There are about 62 stalls which operate on rotational basis. Its also place to taste diverse range of regional food at a very low cost. Dilli Haat is referred as Mini India.

9. National Rail Museum - This is a must place to visit with kids. This museum is dedicated to the rail heritage. Kids would enjoy the toy train ride and "Fairy Queen" the oldest operational steam locomotive.

10. Appu Ghar -This is India's first amuzement park and kids will enjoy the rides and water park out here. Swinging sensations, games on snow like skiing, ice boating, snow sliding, swimming pool are the major attractions which one should not miss at all.

After visiting these places. your kids will carry back a little bit of history, culture and science in their minds with oodles of curiosity to know more about them. Being a true delhite, I have visited many places here, but the ones that I enlisted here are some of the best I enjoyed as a student too and I hope you will have a fascinating time with your kids as well!
