Soy Protein

9 reasons why Soy Protein is essential for a healthy diet

When DuPont invited KetchupMoms for a bloggers meet on the benefits of Soy Protein, we thought we knew it all. Then we realized how little we know about this potent plant-based protein. For starters, Soy protein derived from Soybean is already a big part of our diet - Tofu, Nutree, Soy Sauce, Nut Mixtures and more. In fact with increased lactose intolerance, we Indians have warmed up to Soymilk and its benefits too.

                                     Benefits of Soy Protien

So let us know a little more about DuPont here first. DuPont knows Soya protein like no one else. DuPont Dansco an American company with a legacy of more than 200 years, combines in-depth knowledge of food, science and nutrition. It helps companies deliver the best products in the food, beverage, dietary supplements and more sectors. And this is why we can trust their word on it.

      DuPont Bloggers & Influencers Meet:

It was a pleasure being a part of the first-ever DuPont Nutrition and Health's influencer meet in Gurgaon. It saw some of the most prominent Health & Lifestyle Bloggers under one roof. The agenda was to discuss and understand the science, trends and benefits of Soy protein. It was a learning experience to listen to the stalwarts of DuPont -Indranil Chatterjee, Karuna Jaikrishna, Sujith Sathyadas and Dr Namita Nadar from Fortis Hospital. Each introduced to us a different yet healthy facet of Soy Protein.

     More about Soy Protein:

Soybeans are legumes that originated in East Asia and today are an essential ingredient across different cuisines. The Japanese love a preparation called Miso, essentially a paste made from soybeans, mould culture and another grain. While in Indonesia they can't have enough of Tempeh or soft Soybean Cake. In India Soybean is a perfect source of protein, especially for people who are on vegetarian and vegan diets. Of course, there is a list of reason why it is better than animal based protein too.

Here are the 9 reasons why Soy Protein is essential for a healthy diet:

1) Whole Soybeans are a powerhouse of nutrition: Soybean is a rich source of Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, Thiamin, Vitamin B6, Vitamin K, Copper and more. These are important for the smooth functioning of different body parts.

2) Soybean is the protein supplement that all vegetarians and vegan diet followers need: Our body needs amino acids for better functioning and most can be produced by the body itself. However, it does require some of the nine essential amino acids to be supplemented by the food we eat. Hence a good plant-based protein like Soybean becomes an essential part of our diet.

3) Soy protein is good for muscle health: Soy powder, Soy Drinks and Soy snacks are great for weight watchers. Also a combination of Soy protein, Casein and Whey help in muscle-building.

4) Lactose intolerance: Soy protein-based drinks and food are great for people suffering from Lactose intolerance or are allergic to dairy products. Soy formulas are also available for infants who have trouble digesting milk protein. These are fortified with vitamins and minerals to ensure essential nutrition for growth and development.

5) Soy protein is a weight-watcher's friend: Soy protein makes your tummy feel fuller and hence helps you avoid mid-meal snacking or over-eating.

6) Soy protein is essential for Women's Bone health: There are numerous studies that point towards the soy isoflavones being essential for preventing bone loss. So intake of Soy protein actually increases bone mineral density and ensures good health of bone tissues.

7) Soy is Cholesterol-free: Issues of Heart health are increasing day by day. Along with a good and healthy lifestyle a balanced diet is key to keep our heart healthy. Soy protein being a plant-based protein is low in fat, especially saturated fat and hence is cholesterol-free.

8) Soy helps to reduce Hot flushes: Menopausal symptoms of the likes of hot flashes and night sweats are found to be much lesser in Asian women compared to others. One significant reason for this is considered to be the level of estrogen in our body. And soy protein helps keep that in balance.

9) Soy protein is easy to add in our diet: More and more healthy products rich in Soy protein are available in the market today. Roasted Soynuts, Soymilk, Soy sauce like Teriyaki, Tofu or Soybean curd as it is called, Soynut butter, Soy flour and more.

Wow, so I am heading to cook a nice Indian gravy of Soy chunks and peas, or as we know it nutri-matar. Yes seriously motivated by this wonderful Dupont bloggers meet. May be I can follow it up with my favourite Indian Rice Kheer or Meethe rice for dessert.

P.N- Soy protein is a good addition to your diet. However, moderation is key to the consumption of any food supplement in our everyday diet. Also, some people are prone to be allergic to Soybean, so it is good to listen to one's own body.
