5 Benefits of Horse Riding for Kids

I remember going to my mom’s house with my twins, wondering if they will be safe around her Labrador. But lets just say, that summer was all about ‘loving our happy family, a pet included.’ The dog took to them beautifully and they were just so responsible around it. So when it came to hobby classes for kids, their love for animals guided me straight to a Horse-Riding School. Why? Well the benefits of Horse riding for your kids, go beyond just physical exercise. Ride on to know more.

Well the benefits of Horse riding for your kids, go beyond1) Friends for life: Having a majestic animal like a horse as your best friend is a blessing. Horses are known to be loyal, friendly and obedient. So you are basically gifting your kids a wonderful bond for lifetime. When kids interact, care for and bond with an animal on a regular basis, they grow into more caring and empathetic individuals.

2) Lessons on Focus and Patience: The first thing that you learn on your way to becoming an equestrian is ‘Trotting’. Where you learn to observe and synchronise your movement to that of the horse’s. This is an activity that goes on for days, till your body rises and falls to the rhythm of your horse.

One needs sheer perseverance and patience to see this through. When you see a six years old child, learning the body language of an animal and adapting to it, you start to respect the little geniuses. After a few classes, if your child starts listening to you without interrupting, blame it on his/her horse-friend.

3) Horse-riding creates leaders: Unlike video games, Horses don’t have a code you can break. And like books they don’t have a predictable story-line. Your child is learning to deal with and master a conversation with a living being who is 120kgs and more. He needs to think on his toes. There is no time to seek instructions and no replays. The kids learns to live in the moment, make a decision and take the responsibility for the same. He might fall and get up time and again, till he masters to be the reigning leader.

4) Aerobic activity keeps the kids healthy: Yes this is a calorie-burning physical activity that improves flexibility, co-ordination and balance. Remember your kid is guiding the horse, balancing on its back and using his own back muscles to be firm and effective.

5) Outdoor Playing: The best time to ride is really early morning or late evening, at least in a hot city like Gurgaon. This ensures your kids soak in ample sunlight and fresh air. And they are away from any kind of screens (Although I am all for screen-time for kids too) for a long time. And if the kids join a horse-riding club who knows, they might end up with new friends too.

I have always been in awe of the equestrian club at school. Well, I was mighty scared of this animal though.

Such activities, no doubt help in the overall growth and development of the children and they should be exposed to them.
