Don't miss out on Feni Tasting when in GOA

If food makes travel experiences exceptional, the drinks elevate it to another level. Feni or Fenny made of Cashew Apple is a tasty experience, only Goa has to offer and not experiencing FENI, equals to a Goa trip half-done.

The exotic cashew trees brought in by the Portuguese has turned Goa into a treasure, with the most enchanting beverage, Feni or Fenny. If you have known Goa only for its beaches, sun and sea, then you have missed out on something wonderful and unique "ONLY" to Goa. Popularised as the Goan heritage, Feni is a spirit or country liquor produced exclusively in Goa in the entire world. The journey of a fruit to fenny; the relished aqua-vitae and a cocktail base, can be an experience in itself when in Goa.

It is surprising to know that Feni is popular in Goa for almost over 400 years and is their mainstream spirit. Unlike other alcoholic drinks, Feni does not give you a hangover and is free of any preservatives or added flavours. In fact, the locals see it as one of the best traditional remedies to treat common cold, cough and flu.

Feni making is a tedious process. In the traditional method of making cashew feni, ripe cashew apple is separated from the nut and dropped into a stomping area. The juice released is stored in an earthen pot and buried half-way in the ground to ferment. It is further transferred into pots for distillation. The distillate is collected in an earthen pot called a Launni and made to condense, presently, by immersing a coil in chill water.

Cashew Feni is a triple distilled spirit. The first distillate is known as urrack, about 15% alcohol. It is available during the months of April- May and has a sweet, tangy flavour. Urrack is then redistilled to give a spirit called "Cazulo" or "Cajulo" (40-42% alcohol by volume). Cazulo or Cajulo is again distilled with urrack to give a high strength spirit called Feni (45% abv). However, the first and second distillates are sold as Feni, making it a pleasant and reasonably alcoholic drink. It is also widely used with lemonades and tastes great with aerated drinks like Pepsi, Sprite etc. It can be served with a slice of lime, and sometimes with sugar or sugar syrup, which are popular additions. Versatile and delicious, Feni is an exotic must-try drink in Goa and a gift to take back for your loved ones.

Unlike other alcoholic drinks, Feni does not give you a hangover and is free of any preservatives or added flavours. So next time you Holiday in Goa, forget the beers and try out some fish and Feni, the perfect combination to linger forever!
