Film Review - Murder On The Orient Express for Teenagers

Around the First World War, Agatha Christie brought World's best detective, Hercule Poriot to life through some amazing mystery books. Poirot is a big moustached, Belgian gentleman with an eye for symmetry and a knack for solving the biggest crimes. The latest release, Murder On The Orient Express is based on this best-selling novelists work. And if you have grown up reading Agatha you know, no one writes mysteries like her. After all she is best known for more than 66 detective novels. So if your teenager loves this genre, this remake is a good movie for him/her.

Movie – Murder On The Orient Express

Director: Kenneth Branagh

Based on Agatha Christie novel

KetchupMoms Rating: 3/5

The word's most famous detective Hercules Poirot is coincidentally riding in the same train and his enquiry is set to derail the murderer's getaway.

Review:

Plot: This whodunnit is beautifully set in the steam-engine era and the Alpines lend a beautiful and chilling icy backdrop to it. A luxurious train journey comes to an abrupt halt thanks to an avalanche and a murder most fowl. The word's most famous detective Hercules Poirot is coincidentally riding in the same train and his enquiry is set to derail the murderer's getaway.

A simple business transaction gone wrong becomes challenging for the detective to solve, when every passenger seems motivated to kill. A multiracial couple that is hiding more than their relationship.  A secretary to the victim who has probably siphoned off more than just the money. A valet who seems to have added more than just the sugar and spice in the coffee. A super rich couple, where the countess is addicted to her inner fears. A nun who doesn't want to partner anyone in a sin but who might be the biggest sinner. A rich old women who is accompanied by more than just her secretary and a husband-hunter who is hiding more than just her age. A professor who still has a lot to learn. Will the detective solve the case or will the case solve his anxiety?

What is different about this whodunit?

This is not just any mystery movie where you join the puzzle and bust the killer. Detective Poirot says in the movie 'There is right, there is wrong and then there is you'. And this is what the movie is all about. The right, the wrong and the place where your conscience belongs. And this is the most rewarding thing for your teenager.

5 Hercule quotes your teenager will never forget :

1)Hercule Poirot: "Only by interrogating the other passengers could I hope to see the light, but when I began to question them, the light, as Macbeth would have said, thickened."

2) Hercule Poirot: "My friend. Now I must go and wrestle with my report to the police and with my conscience."

3) Hercule Poirot: "I can only see a world as it should be. It makes an imperfection stick out like the nose on your face."

4) Hercule Poirot: "God is always busy."

5) Hercule Poirot: "The scales of justice cannot always be equally weighed."

Is this movie Teenager-friendly?

Except one scene where the body is shown with red colour smeared over it, the movie is clean and easy on the eyes. The dialogues are witty and the actors outstanding like Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Josh Gad and Derek Jacobi. It might get a little slow for our insta-age kids at places, but gathers steam every now and then.

Interesting Trivia: Murder on the Orient Express was loosely inspired by the real-life kidnapping and murder of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh's young son in 1932. And Agatha Christie was a frequent passenger of the actual Oriental Express. And was even stuck in it once for 6 days because of snow.
