Shabdkhel- Making a Board Game to Make Learning Hindi Fun!

When my daughter's winter homework read "Make a Hindi Board Game", I suddenly realised the dearth of it. And not just in my twin's activity and book cupboards. But in the toy shops, online portals and our demand for the same too. Come to think of it, the twins and me love playing Snakes and Ladders, Ludo, Pictionary, Crossword and lately Monopoly. Yes, no Hindi game. And that triggered a beautiful journey of creativity and making learning Hindi fun.

Now for the little Hindi Board Game that my daughter and me came up with - Shabdkhel.

What is Shabdkhel?

A simple Hindi Board Game for the kindergartens that makes learning Hindi fun and easy. A simple combination of numbers in two circles prompts the kids to think of a word, name of fruits, vegetables, animals, birds, countries and more.

How to make Shabdkhel?

Step1: On a cardboard (A4 sheet size) draw the biggest circle possible.

Step 2: Now a draw another circle inside it, almost half its size.

Step 3: Divide the inner circle into six compartments and number them from 1-6.

Step 4: Replicate the same in the outer circle and number these too from 1-6.

Step 5: In the inner circle write Indian Alphabets of your choice - We chose अ आ, इ ई,  उ ऊ,  ए ऐ, ओ औ and न प ब भ म य र ल व for the six compartments respectively.

Step 6: In the outer circle we chose six categories - like flowers, fruits, country, city, things, names, colours, food etc.

Step 7: Add two dices to your game. When you roll these, each dice will signify the number in one circle. So the two dices will make a combination of these two numbers and prompt a player to make a word.

Step 8: Each time a player uses the combination and gives the correct answer, he she will win a smiley or a tick card. To make these cards, the kids can cut card boards into small squares and draw smileys and ticks on it.

How do we Play Shabdkhel?

1) Shabdkhel can be played with n number of players. The players have to take turns to roll the two dice and use the number combinations to make a word.

For e.g.: If the dice roll combination is 1 and 4.

and in the inner circle 1 the Hindi alphabet is अ आ and the outer circle says fruit & vegetables, then the player can make - आम, आलू, अनार

2) Every time they make a word they get a 'smiley' or a 'tick' card.

3) The player who earns the maximum cards in the end, wins.

What are the benefits of playing Shabdkhel?

1) This is an excellent resource for getting kids interested in new Hindi words. Keep a Hindi dictionary next to you so you can keep looking for new names with combinations, where the kids get stuck.

2) It is a great memory game for the kids too. Every time the kids learn a new country, city, fruit, colour or even an animals names while playing, there are more chances of them remembering them for the next round.

3) Language proficiency in Hindi. This game is a great prompt for kids to grasp and learn this beautiful language.

This game can be fun to make in any other language too. If you try this do let us know. Till then you can try some crafts like ribbon art, Lord Ganesha Craft, Mouse puppets with pet bottles or Fall Nature Craft
