How to Grow an Organic Garden

Why do we need to grow an Organic Garden? All of us know that eating healthy and organic food is good. Our forefathers were in sync with nature, they used manure from the cattle they reared, to grow grains and vegetables that were consumed by the complete family and the community at large. However with industrialization and people moving to cities this setup broke and we started moving towards processed and fast foods. In the last 100 years we have destroyed the natural way of life with consequences on our health and strength.

However, we can still make an effort to eat and stay healthy and pass the same wisdom to our children as well. We in cities can use our terraces and balconies to start with learning to grow our small little herbs and vegetables garden. And then inculcate the same habits to buy, cook and eat organic in our families. If we start now, we shall start to see the different with our daily energy levels and in the long run healthy and beautiful minds.


Within 7-10 days the seeds germinate and 30-45 days the first harvest of full grown Spinach leaves can be taken. Poring a little neem water prevents pest from attacking the young leaves and add nutrients to the soil as well. A little tip always goes a long way.


In this article let’s get down as how we shall start and what plants we can grow.

What we need:

Pots:  The size can vary depending on what you're growing, but you want to make sure there's enough depth for the plants' roots to fully develop. You'll probably want something at least 8" in diameter; more is always better than less.

Planting soil: Organic soil, devoid or artificial fertilizers and added with natural manure from vermi-compost and hydrating substrate as cocopeat. 

Plants: No matter what you're growing, you should probably buy them as seedlings, not seeds.

Plants the recommend:
Holy Basil (Tulsi): There is never a wrong time to plant Tulsi. “They say it’s a blessing to have a Tulsi plant”, to honor the sacred herb and experience its wide range of beneficial qualities all we need to do is plant a cutting of the tulsi plant in a pot with planting soil, water it and place it where there is a lot of sunshine. Water it in the morning and evenings and you shall have a health plant within a few weeks. Use the Tulsi leaves in your green tea, eat them on an empty stomach in the morning for effectively increasing your immune system. Or add them to your wheat pasta and salads for that unique fragrance.

Spinach: Spinach needs no special plant-care beyond watering and harvesting. All we need to do is sow spinach seeds in a well moist pot and we need to take care that the soil stays well hydrated. Within 7-10 days the seeds germinate and 30-45 days the first harvest of full grown Spinach leaves can be taken. Coriander: We all lover coriander and nothing like fresh home grown coriander, especially in Indian cooking. Coriander is directly sown. So there is no special step called planting coriander. The sowing and planting of coriander seeds happens at the same time. If you are growing in containers, then you can move the container around to get good lighting. Within 5-7 days the coriander seeds germinate, they then needs ample sunlight. Move the container to a sunny area and water well. About 4 weeks from germination the coriander is ready to harvest and make your biryani's smell really good and fresh. 

Mint (Pudina): Growing and planting Mint indoors is easy. You can find Mint growing indoors in a pot of soil or even in a bottle of water. For starters, you need a container with adequate drainage for healthy plant growth. Pot up your Mint plant with a good potting mixture. When growing Mint inside, there are a few things necessary for its continual care. One is watering. These plants prefer to be kept moist but not overly wet. If the upper part of soil becomes dry to the touch, then watering is needed. Otherwise, try to keep it evenly moist. Use fresh mint leaves for chutney or herbal tea or seasoned curds as I like them. Mint marination also lend a different flavour to the dishes.

I can go on and on with the plants that we can start to grow and I will share with you many more plants and vegetables that we can home-grow. However, the idea right now is that you have a hands on with gardening. We shall share methods as how to use our kitchen waste to make compost and use that as fertilizers in our own plants. How neem and oils can be used as pest controllers and how we can cherish the fruits of our labour with recipes that are made from the freshest ingredients, grown on our own balconies.  So comeback next week for more.
