The Pierre Taj, New York

How the luxurious The Pierre, a Taj Hotel in New York made me happy as a mom!

Nestled in the heart of New York is the iconic The Pierre, a Taj Hotel on Fifth Avenue, overlooking Central Park. And precisely why we decided to stay there in September 2013, with our twins. This was their first trip to USA and it had to be the best.

The KetchupMoms rating : 4

A celebrated history: The Pierre, Taj has been the favourite of the rich and famous for years now. Its prestigious guest list has President Richard M. Nixon, Elizabeth Taylor, Yves Saint- Laurent and more.

Constructed in:  Year 1930

Designed by: New York firm of Schultze and Weaver

At the cost of: $15million

An immigrant named Charles Pierre Casalasco, from Corsica along with a bunch of Wall Street biggies gave this 41storeys tall Landmark to America. In October 1930, this hotel threw open its 714 rooms along with an opulent hospitality to the New Yorkers. However the Great Depression took its toll on its owner and so it had to be sold off. It was added to the prestigious Taj group only as recently as 2005.

The Pierre, Taj experience:

location: The Pierre overlooks the Central Park, which has many perks.  You can literally walk in and out of the hotel and hit the park, the zoo side is the closest. You can happily discover the pleasures of the park such as the zoo, the museums. the Oscar Wilde tours to the Pedicab tours. If you are an Apple fan, and a new gadget is being launched, you can just walk over and camp outside its store, next door. Or you can eat pretzels to your heart's content while taking a horse-buggy ride.

Rooms: The property has an old world charm to it. The hospitality is not quite the famous Taj India special, but the staff is caring and polite. The rooms are big and spacious and if you want a Central Park view, you need to pay extra.

The Five Star Service: Efficient. They are always eager and happy to look after you. But the one thing that made the stay memorable was a little heart-warming gesture. No it was not a special anniversary dinner or a complimentary champagne bottle either. It was their way of telling us that our kids were too noisy for other guests.

Our kids were just about three years old at that point and did have their meltdowns. To make sure the neighbours were not inconvenienced, they did not knock on our door and put in a request. Instead the hotel gifted them a beautiful interactive musical toy. Yes it even had a light show and the kids could pull it all around the room.

Food: Well lets say we have had better food at Taj Hotels, especially Taj Goa. And also we were there to make the most of New York City so we were out for most of the meals.

Value for money: Honestly you can’t be thinking Value when you check into a property like Taj Pierre. Having said that, if I was to spend that kind of money again in New York, I would go in for a sea facing hotel instead. Simply because I have already tasted the Taj hospitality, New York style.

Trivia: The infamous Pierre Hotel Robbery is a case you want to read about, especially because it is registered in The Guinness Book Of World Records as the largest and the most successful Hotel Robbery.

Taj has always been known for their hospitality - even though they may not topped the Indian Taj mark, I am sure it was great.
