Why It Matters To Have A Good Mattress

Can a mattress really help heal? Well, more often than not we wake up ready to sleep. Yes, we are tired, exhausted and irritable and it has nothing to do with what we ate for dinner. And it has everything to do with our soft or too hard mattress that has either sagged or was just the wrong choice from the beginning. Really? Yes. You don't have to be the princess from the famous 'Princess and the Pea' story to experience sleepless nights. Like I used to keep twisting and turning in my sleep because I was uncomfortable. I blamed it on the heavy dinner parties, bad television viewing habits and even Global Warming. But I was literally sleeping on my problem.

Sleepwell mattress review

My mattress is what needed to be changed, dumped or replaced. We have been together for the last 17 years, and that could be overbearing for anyone. Yes in this age of Paytms and instant transfers, I had been using the same mattress for 2 decades. And I recently found out that I had to dump my mattress. The good news is, it does not have feelings, lol. But on a serious note, this new beginning is rather important for my back and the rest of my body. I have been waking up with serious muscle aches, and soreness on my sleeping-side, the left side.

And after much research and even acupressure sessions, I finally realised the root cause of my sleep trouble was my mattress. It had sagged and hence as my physiotherapist suggested 'It could be pushing your spine into a misalignment. '

Here are 4 signs that your mattress needs to change and your muscle ache is being caused by the same:

1) If you don't wear old and worn-out shoes, know that your mattress has a life too. Yes if your mattress is older than 8 years, monitor your sleep pattern and look out for any soreness in the body when you wake up.

2) If you sleep on a particular part of the body like I sleep on my left side and experience piercing pain and numbness on waking up, your mattress is not suiting your body.

3) If you wake up and feel tired, sore and experience back-pain but become better as the day progresses, it does point out to the extra pressure your mattress is putting on your body. Or it could be reverse where your mattress has sagged and your muscles are overworking when you are asleep.

4) Also, the basic check is to look for some wear and tear, sagging, unevenness in the mattress.

Researched tips to replace your old and saggy mattress:

1) A good mattress, whether a foam, spring, air or even the traditional Indian ones made with cotton, are designed to balance out your body weight. Just how good cushioned shoes even out your body weight on your feet, a well-designed mattress takes the shape of your body, so you don't feel weighed down.

2) A very soft mattress does not provide enough support and hence can cause the spine to misalign: Which means that your body will not relax and will miss the healing stage of sleep. This is the last stage of sleep, where your body temporarily experiences paralysis and goes into a deep slumber and all the energy is used to reactivate your injured parts. Instead, your body stays active and your muscles, especially the back muscles, work overtime to keep it firm.

3) A very hard mattress causes sleeplessness and exhausts us: There is a reason we cannot sleep comfortably on a hard surface like a tiled floor. The reason is that our body is against a solid material that does not adjust to the line, weight or shape of our body. Pretty much what a hard mattress does to us through the night. This is the reason we toss, turn and spend the night just trying to find that comfortable posture over a hard mattress.

4) A bad mattress makes us more prone to injuries: We know now that only when the body attains the third and fourth stage of sleep, can it heal itself. And for a good sleep, we need a good mattress and a good pillow. In fact, I even sleep with a pillow between my legs to support my lower back and my thighs. But most importantly we need a mattress that caters to our body type and sleep requirement. Because a sleepless night can make you irritable, drowsy the next day. Also, if your body has not recovered from the previous day's tiredness or injuries, you are only overworking your body and leaving it vulnerable to more injuries.

What I chose and why?

Choosing a good mattress for yourself is as personal and important as buying your lingerie. It needs to be body-right for you. So after a lot of research, I landed up choosing the Comfort Cell range from Sleepwell, India's leading mattress brand. There were two prime reasons for this:

1) I have my twins jumping in and out of my bed and the movement of these simians can disturb a sound sleep. So I chose a firm but not the hard mattress that absorbs any movement.

2) It adjusts around your spine which means it conforms to your spine and bounces back to its normal position every morning. This eliminates any chance of pressure on your spine or body when you are resting.

The other mattress I considered is Sleepwell's Nexa. And it only lost out because they were sold out. Lol. I guess Luxury sells faster today, especially when it is comfortable too. Here is why I considered Nexa

1) It is made from memory foam which simply means that the foam mattress responds to the shape of our body. It equally distributes our body weight and hence provides good support to our posture.

2) A good ventilation system: Yes we sleep on our mattresses for a minimum of 8 hours every night. And people like me, who sleep on their stomach have their nose deeply buried. So when I read about the good air flow that this mattress ensures, I was sold.

Experts often say that for a sound sleep, one should follow a sleep-routine. And I totally agree. My routine includes bedtime book reading to my twins. Followed by me catching up on my books, online messages and chats and more. All this while I am comfortably perched on my mattress. And from here starts my journey to a sound and healthy sleep. So I chose what matters the most, a good mattress, from Sleepwell.

That\'s such helpful information Charu. We Indian have the habit of keeping things way too long than their shelf life. Mattresses are one of those things.

For sound sleep a nice mattress is an essential thing. Otherwise we get up sore and untested. I too follow almost the same sleep routine as you.
