Pearl Souvenir from the City of Pearls, Hyderabad

Hyderabad attracts tourists from across the globe to visit the famous Charminar, Golkonda Fort, Ramoji Film City, Birla Mandir and many more city attractions. But a trip to Hyderabad is incomplete without shopping for pearls.
Pearl souvenirs has become an integral part of the city’s culture since years. But have you ever wondered why Hyderabad is called the "City of Pearls" though being miles away from the oceans? The story dates back to over 200 years when Hyderabad was ruled by the Nizams. For more than two centuries, that is from 18th century till the mid of 20th century, the Nizams ruled the princely states of Hyderabad. Known for their opulent lifestyle, imperial reign and patronage for craftsmanship, the Nizams demanded the best of jewellery and thus attracted many craftsmen, especially from the Arabian Gulf where the original pearls were found in abundance. Eventually, Hyderabad became the hub of pearls.

why Hyderabad is called the

There are two types of pearls- real and cultured. The real pearls are obtained from oysters and are very expensive. Cultured pearls are an imitation of real pearls and undergo the extensive process of drilling. Skilled artisans in Chandanpet in the outskirts of the city are involved in the drilling process of pearls. Post this, the pearls are graded according to the sheen, glaze, shape, size, lustre and uniformity. Pearls are mostly found in white, pale white, pink and black colours and in various shapes and sizes; the most sort of being the round and rice-shaped ones. An easy way to distinguish a real pearl is by its shape and size. No two pearls have the same shape or size nor do they glimmer. The real and cultured pearls are used to make different kinds of ornaments like Kundan sets, bracelets, Satlads, Lacchas, Chokers, Waist belt etc.

If you plan to shop for authentic pearls, look out for jewellery stores in the Charminar area, General Bazaar and not to forget the entire street consisting of pearl shops named Phatter Ghatti. Branches of leading jewellery stores are spread across different parts of the city, in malls and even in the International Airport. You can also find the perfect pearl set with a combination of rich rubies, emeralds, gold and silver in any of the famous local jewellery along with a lifetime warranty card for the pearls. It is better to stay away from any street stalls selling pearls though they might be inexpensive and look attractive with their sheen as they can turn out duplicate.

Having stayed in Hyderabad for more than eight years, I can recommend few stores to help you find your best pearl souvenirs-
• Krishna Pearls and Jewellers
• Mangatrai Pearls, Gems and Jewellers
• Sri Ram Jewellers
• Sri Jagdamba Pearls
• Kedarnath Motiwale Pearls
• Meena Jewellers
• Manepally Jewellers

I am sure you all will agree that Wearing pearls gives us an Air of Refinement and pearl of wisdom is that if you do not have time to dive deep into the sea in search of pearls , just travel to the city of pearls to own this appropriate treasure !!
