Scholastic Soulful Stories - 6th June 2018

Do you know that there is a unique shadow puppet art form called Tholpavakoothu? It is believed to have originated in the 18th century AD. Thol means leather, pava means doll and koothu means play and this ancient art is performed by Pulavars from Kerala, South India. The artists use leather puppets to recreate Ramayana.

So we brought these great pulavars on board of Soulful stories to bring the story of Ramayana, live for our kids and give them some knowledge about our epics.

For our Younger kids - 6th June 2018 will embark on our attempt to infuse life to such traditional art (10am-12 noon) and will culminate with learning another traditional art “Basket Making” (1pm-3pm), giving our kids an insight to these epic and ancient arts.

Our Artists today –

Mr Rajeev Ramachandran from Kerala recreating Ramayana through leather shadow art – Tholpavakoothu. He is the son of K.K Ramachandra Pulavar, Natioanl Award Winner. He has achieved many milestones in this field. He has won Ustad Bismillahakhan Yuva Puraskar National Award from Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi and many awards including “Young talented artist award”. He has participated in the World Music and Amp, shadow puppet festival conducted in Thailand. http://tholpavakoothu.in/about-us/

Basket Making Team will help kids to make baskets and understand the integrity of such traditional craft. Making baskets is not an easy task and if our kids are thought by the family who has been making their living out of this art, they get to learn the tricks and tips of this wonderful art effortlessly.
