The Purplish-Blue beauties to bloom again now, after 12 Years!!

Every twelve years, the rolling hills are carpeted with tiny purple flowers, the Neelakurinji ('Strobilanthes kunthianus'). The rare and stellar natural phenomena happens n the shola grasslands of Western Ghats - the Nilgiri hills, the Palani hills and the Eravikulam hills of Munnar. The mist clad hills, tranquil breeze, picturesque landscape, mild climate, sprawling tea plantations and winding walkways have always attracted travel enthusiasts to Munnar and Ooty. But this year is the year of the purplish blue beauties to bloom again! Neelakurinji ShrubNeelakurinji is a shrub with a unique life cycle. It blooms once in twelve years and 40 odd varieties of Neelakurinji will be witnessed between the months of July 2018 and October 2018. Nilgiri hills acquires its names as “the Blue Mountains” because it is the habitat of these blue beauties. It is marvellous to see the ravishing terrains clad in bluish hues endlessly. The beauty and rarity of Neelakurinji has inspired many a poet in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Neelakurinji, for the poets, is a symbol of yearning, love and happiness.
