To involve, participate or withdraw !!

It was a different evening at the school. The entire staff and management had gathered to bid adieu to their beloved principal who had put in relentless efforts for twenty-seven long years to get the school to an unassailable position in the town. As words of praise poured from associates about the contributions of the principal regarding the addition of the secondary section, erection of the new building, getting the government aid, increase in staff salaries etc, different thoughts were running through the mind of the vice-principal, his successor. She kept identifying these contributions to have grown from her ideas for which she was neither recognized, nor been acknowledged. With just two years for her retirement, she wondered the need to accept the principal’s position at all. Would she ever be able to make any impact during her short stint? Was she really a shadow or her ungrateful superior did not have the sense to withdraw?
through continuous introspection and reflecting over our actions, we reach a stage when we start recognizing the need to involve, participate or withdraw.
It is indeed very strange that most of us tend to bend, adjust and manipulate to any extent just to earn a name and gather fame. To gain a position and remain there, we harden ourselves and do not mind being a little insensitive, ignoring the contributions of the closed ones in our family, workplace or society who helped us reach there. We overshadow and brush aside the feelings of many a people so that we shine high in the minds of others who watch. We feel insecure when we are not recognized but do not have the mind to gauge if someone else undergo something similar because of our own insensitivity. It is our self-centeredness that pushes us always to hog the limelight and not allow anyone else to get their due credit. Is it not high time that we need to think when to withdraw from being the center of attraction?

At any age and position, it requires a tremendous amount of maturity to view a situation without questioning what is in it for us. An outsider approach will help us ascertain the need to involve ourselves and not rush in with our enthusiasm. There is a lot of theory about being participative and not remain a stranger in a group. But we need to take care that this participation should be restricted to the actual need of the situation and not be mixed up to give a feeling of interference to others in the group, which might force them to take a backseat. Through our mindfulness while performing any action, we grow on this ability to understand about the sense of withdrawal. Only through continuous introspection and reflecting over our actions, we reach a stage when we start recognizing the need to involve, participate or withdraw.

The sense of withdrawal in us brings a lot of ease around and in us. It is strange but true that we are left with a better sense of completeness than when we are involved. A huge amount of positive energy is infused in the situation. We also recognize the fact that people are better off without, than being with us. When we are released from this burden of self-assertiveness, we feel lighter in our minds and see ourselves free. The extra bondages which we had inflicted on ourselves fall off and help us to understand what we need to do. In that creative state of mind, right action begins.

Very well said, participation with a thought over actual need is ideal. Looking at the situation from outside as a third person and then working with the team can help.

Withdrawal or participation. Hmm! I guess the call of the hour is contribution. Being recognized or getting somebody recognized is the Quagmire.

Power & position most of the time make oeople greedy and actually they dont find peace in withdrawing. But this ability to accept withdrawal at the right time is a boon and only few have it.

You said my mind girl. Many a times I feel people become so self-centered and manipulative for succeeding. in life. Like mothers who show off their children but on the other hand cannot find time for the same children. This might be a controversial example but I really feel so. Well everybody to his own.

Charu, I am a bit confused about this article and maybe have a different opinion. Withdrawing is easy, staying committed is not, that\'s what my belief is. Since you didn\'t conclude the article, I am wondering what are your final thoughts.

I think for someone who has always been a center of attention , it\'s really hard to withdraw. I have personal experience with the same. I felt dejected while I knew this was the only thing to do at the moment.

A good topic to reflect upon. U correctly mentioned that it needs lots of maturity and sensibility from a person to know when to involve, participate and withdraw.

What you have written is faced by so many of us in our daily work environment. There are always people who take credit for your ideas or simply stay quiet when they are praised for something they haven\'t done. All they need to do is think for a second as to how they would feel if the roles were reversed.
