Understand your inner strength: KetchupMoms

Understand Yourself ; You will be Happy

“Know then thyself, presume not God to scan. The proper study of Man-kind is Man” – Alexander Pope

The mystics say that happiness is the song of the Atman or the soul. In the second chapter of the Bhagavadgita, Lord Krishna says “Äshantasya kutah sukham”. How can there be happiness, without peace? Undoubtedly it is the peace within us that makes us feel happy.

What do we trade this peace for? In the pursuit of becoming something – a ranker at school or college, a doctor or a chartered accountant, a good husband, or a father, we forget one fundamental but important point - being ourselves. The desire of “becoming” leads to anger on non-fulfilment. Instead of just chilling out in the being, an individual loses himself in the vain pursuit of becoming something.

Reflection of self: KetchupMomsIt is not cynical but on the contrary, if we give a thought to the whole process, we might realize that it needs deep contemplation of our actions and activities, to know and understand ourselves. We will gradually appreciate that in the experiment of understanding ourselves, our thinking process slows down leading to inner-silence and thereby enabling reflection of the self. We would also understand that course corrections automatically take place within ourselves without any effort.

Let us approach the whole process of life conversely – “ Is there any reason to be sad about?!”
“No, not really”, unless there is a degeneration and not an evolution at all. Let us begin from the place we started this journey. We were nobody when we were just born. It is the name given by our parents that enabled an outsider to identify us. We went about schooling, graduating, working, or doing a business only with a view to keep ourselves busy or emulate our neighbors or members of our age. We competed with them at school, games, or office, we got married, had children and grandchildren. There was, some turmoil in most of our operational activities of life with moments of joy here and there. At the end of the day, if we could introspect and check what we were so busy about, we might feel that in this strange procession of life, we did much less or nothing for our self. This probe creates a vacuum within our self and it is this emptiness or despondency that triggers an individual to strive something higher or realize himself.

Many reputed organizations undergo a SWOT analysis of their employees. Employees are encouraged to Inner Strength: KetchupMomswork on their strengths for bettering their contributions to the organization, eliminate their weaknesses, capitalize the opportunities that would come their way and thwart off all threats that would jeopardize the growth of the business. All this is done under the able guidance of their superiors. On a similar note, every individual should dwell on a SWOT analysis for a sanity check of his/her evolution in life. It would be good to have a guide in the form of a Guru.

Gradually, it will dawn that knowing one’s own limitations is the greatest strength for an individual. This will help us identify the reason for being sad, which in-turn will give us a pointer to be happy. It is this happiness that gives us inner peace.

Roman poet Horace, two thousand years ago, beautifully uttered these lines:
Happy the man, and happy he alone,
He who can call today his own,
He who, secure within, can say,
Tomorrow do thy worst, for I have lived today.

Stay happy, for there is no reason to be unhappy.
