travelling with kids

Why is travelling, one of the best gifts that we can give to our children?

“The world is a book and those who don’t travel read only a page”, Saint Augustine

We, as parents are toiling hard to give our children the best in this world. But most of the time, we are more keen in giving them sensory and materialistic pleasures. Ever wondered what could give our children simple pleasures of life?

It is rightly said ‘A family that travels together stays together’. As parents, we should reflect the importance of travel to our kids. Travel does not mean emptying our pockets for that flashy vacation with boutique hotels. It is about exploring the world at their own desk. There are some best things our children can learn from travelling. Glance through and you all will surely agree.

Getting close to reality - Fiction has become reality for our kids. Most of us live in these urban cities where we absolutely cannot marvel the nature. Sadly, the mountains, jungles, and the rivers which our kids see in books, have become a reality for them. They live in an imaginary world. We fail to fathom the excitement, our child has for these enchanting things. Let us give them a chance to really absorb themselves in these bounties of nature! Travel to take them close to the phenomena of the physical world. Convert their imaginations to reality through travel.

Fun while travelling with kidsTake them to show kangaroos walking on the streets in Australia or maple leaves decorating the roads in Canada. Visit the hills of Munnar in Kerala or feel your breath in the Himalayas. Go to beaches in Maldives and let your children catch fish and tortoise whole day, completely away from their mobiles and tabs. These are the experiences will be remembered by them, forever.

Understanding cultural diversity – Travelling exposes our kids to different cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives. No matter, how much one sees on internet or in books about these plethora of places, we cannot really explore until we visit them. And as children grow up, apart from enjoying the scenic beauty, they would appreciate different school of thoughts rather than being xenophobia. Travel  exposure will make them real Global citizens.
Some of the interesting culturally enriching destinations are Kecak and fire dance in Bali, Lamp festival in Hong Kong, Oktoberfest in Germany, Rio carnival in Brazil or Tomato festival in Spain. At India, we can show them the famous Rath Yatra in Orissa, Holi in Vrindavan, Boat Race in Kerala, Sun temple in Konark, Ajanta and Ellora in Aurangabad and the list is never ending.

Develop appetite for adventure and thrill – Kids now-a-days are more confine to four walls with their indoor games. They fail to appreciate the thrill and skill needed for mountain trekking, river rafting, kayaking, paragliding, rope climbing, cliff jumping and many more. Sportsman spirit, collaboration, concentration, and the determination are some of the key qualities kids can learn from these activities. Travelling also helps to develop skill for various adventurous sports and prepares them to be more daring.
Some of the striking adventure trip ideas are Snorkeling in Andaman, trekking in Himachal, river-rafting in Uttarakhand, Sail boating in San Diego, Parasailing in Pattaya, Kayaking in Krabi Scuba-diving in Bali or try underwater scooter in Mauritius.

Importance of Bonding – Travel helps us to bond with the kids in a big way. As our lifestyles are so hectic these days, there is a huge time crunch and communication gap. Short weekend getaways can give us time to bond and understand each other as a family. Singing songs, playing games, and doing fun activities together while travelling, gives us an excellent opportunity to share our feelings and understand our family better. Short weekend getaways with kids does this magic.
Mumbaikars could take a trip to Alibaugh, Khandala, Lonavala or Kajrat. From Delhi, plan visit to Neemrana fort to get the taste of royal or to Taj Mahal to marvel its architecture! Other great picnic spots from Delhi are Alwar, Bharatpur bird sanctuary, Damadam lake, Murthal and Manesar. From Bangalore one can head to Ramanagaram, Nandi Hills, Savandurga, Anthargange, Shivanasamudram or Mysore. From Chennai, we can make weekend trips to Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram or Tirupati to reconnect with our ancient culture. You can also plan a quick tour to Puducherry, Chandragiri, or Tada Falls. All these weekend getaways are perfect picnic spots, giving us options from scenic beauty to farm houses and from calming senses to adventure sports. All these places have affordable stay and best food options.

Importance of Me-time - As adults, we are so occupied with our chores and problems. Similarly, our children are also so engrossed with their routines that there is no self-time for any of us. Kids also have their own set of issues troubling them. Travel will let them break away from monotony of routine and rejuvenates them.

The famous American poet T.S. Eliot rightly said, “The journey, not the arrival matters”.

Not all class rooms have four walls. Let our children get the mystical experience of learning through fun and explore the world and self, through travelling.
